The star has donated the full amount of his £25k award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

He was given the prize on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function local spots had in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, collecting more than £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation supported venues that were confronting imminent closure due to issues arising from floods, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted funding support in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in big venues backs the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

They are one example who contributed their honor prize money to good causes

He is among several artists to contribute his honor winnings to good deeds.

When they earned the prize in the mid-90s for their release their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the group would give their winnings to the organization War Child.

In 2002, musician the artist shared her bounty across multiple charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they needed new equipment," she shared with a publication.

In recent years, the band donated their winnings to the youth organization that developed their act, as well as other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients they contributed their award to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our success touched another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued several local spots in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and the second in that location were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who buy "stakes" in the properties.
