Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
