Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the prestigious cup on 14 different times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the net early on.

Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
