The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
